Free tiers

What the free tier actually gets you

Last verified: September 2026

The short answer: every major AI tool has a genuinely usable free tier — none of them is bait-and-switch. The catch is rationing: usage caps, lower-priority access, and a few strings attached (ads on ChatGPT in some markets, no Office integration on Copilot free, training-data defaults on consumer tiers). If you use AI a few times a week, free is fine. If you hit the caps weekly, $20/month is the honest answer. Verified September 2026.

What "free" costs you

Free tiers don't take your money, but they're not free of trade-offs:

  • Ads: ChatGPT Free may show ads in some markets. You're the product in the way that matters.
  • Data training defaults: free and consumer-tier plans typically default to letting vendors use your conversations to train models. Paid plans generally give you better privacy terms. Either way, check the settings — the opt-out exists, but it isn't always the default.
  • No integration: Copilot free is web chat only. If you want the assistant inside Word, Excel, or Outlook, that's Copilot Pro at $20/month (plus a Microsoft 365 plan).
  • The queue: free users sit behind paying users. When everyone's hammering the service, you'll feel it first.
  • The caps: none of these plans tell you the exact cap up front, and caps tighten during peak load. "Limited" means "we'll tell you when you've had enough."

Who should stay free vs. upgrade

Stay free if: you open an AI chatbot a few times a week for casual questions, drafting help, or curiosity. The free tiers handle this comfortably, and there's no shame in the free plan — it's the right price for light use.

Upgrade to one $20/month plan if: you hit usage caps weekly, you want the better models and higher limits, you need the AI inside your work tools (Office, Google Workspace), or you want your data handled under paid-plan privacy terms. One subscription — pick by your ecosystem — not four.

Don't upgrade to the $100 tier because the free tier annoys you. The $20 tier fixes the free tier's problems for almost everyone; the $100 tier solves a different problem (all-day professional usage) that you almost certainly don't have.
