Student and nonprofit discounts on AI tools: what's real

Last verified: September 2026

The short answer: the student deals are real and generous — Google's 12 free months of AI Pro and OpenAI's 4 free months of Plus are both live as of September 2026, but both auto-renew at full price, so set a calendar reminder. Anthropic offers no student discount at all. For nonprofits, we found no vendor-specific AI subscription discounts — check TechSoup rather than believing anyone who promises one. Everything below was verified in September 2026.

Students: Google's 12 free months of AI Pro

DetailWhat we verified
Offer12 months free — AI Pro for eligible US students, AI Plus for eligible non-US students
WhoEligible college students (US: AI Pro · outside the US: AI Plus)
AnnouncedAugust 19, 2026
Claim byDecember 31, 2026
After 12 monthsAuto-renews at $19.99/month (US) unless you cancel; non-US renews at local AI Plus pricing

Students outside the US get a version of the offer too: 12 months of AI Plus free instead of AI Pro. It's still free — just the lower tier.

Students: OpenAI's 4 free months of ChatGPT Plus

DetailWhat we verified
Offer4 months of ChatGPT Plus free (billed in USD)
WhoEligible students, verified through SheerID
Claim byOctober 31, 2026
After 4 monthsAuto-renews at $20/month unless you cancel

SheerID verification means proving your enrollment — it's a real check, not a checkbox. Budget about ten minutes for it.

The auto-renew trap (and how to beat it)

Both offers convert to paid subscriptions automatically. A free year that quietly becomes $19.99/month is a $240 surprise waiting a year from now. When you claim either offer, do this immediately:

  1. Open your calendar and add a reminder for two days before the free period ends.
  2. In the reminder, write: "Cancel AI Pro free trial or start paying $19.99/mo."
  3. When it fires, make a deliberate choice — keep it because you use it, or cancel.

That's it. The whole trick is the calendar reminder. Vendors count on you forgetting; now you won't.

Also real: Perplexity student months

Perplexity runs student offers too — free months of its Pro tier for verified students. Terms rotate, so check Perplexity's student page for the current offer rather than taking a number here as gospel.

The honest gap: Anthropic has no student discount

No student pricing, no education discount, nothing for Claude Pro. That's confirmed as of September 2026, not an oversight in this guide. If you're a student who wants Claude specifically, your honest options are Claude Free (limited daily usage) or paying the standard $20/month — or claiming Google's or OpenAI's free offer and using Claude's free tier alongside it.

Nonprofits: nothing vendor-specific found

We looked. As of September 2026, we found no nonprofit-specific pricing on AI subscriptions from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or Microsoft. Anyone telling you there's a "nonprofit Claude discount" is inventing it — so are we not going to.

What to actually do:

  • Check TechSoup for discounted software — it's the real channel for nonprofit tech pricing.
  • Check each vendor's education/nonprofit pages directly; offers appear and disappear.
  • Look at Google for Nonprofits and Microsoft's nonprofit programs, which bundle AI features into existing nonprofit offerings rather than selling standalone AI discounts.

And until a vendor ships a real nonprofit AI plan, a $0 free tier plus one paid seat for your heaviest user covers most small nonprofits fine.

Prices move — this page is a map, not a contract AI vendors change prices, rename plans, and reshuffle tiers several times a year. Everything above was verified in September 2026. Before paying, confirm the current price on the vendor's own pricing page — and note the claim deadlines above, because they are the part most likely to expire.
Informational only — verify before purchasing.
