But not every plan offers it (ChatGPT Plus is monthly-only), and the savings only count if you actually stay all year. The worked example
Take a 10-person team on ChatGPT Business or Claude Team standard seats:
- Monthly billing: $25 × 12 months × 10 seats = $3,000/year
- Annual billing: $20 × 12 months × 10 seats = $2,400/year
- Difference: $600/year saved — or $60 per seat per year.
Per seat, that's $300 vs. $240 a year. Real money at team scale, rounding error at individual scale — one person saves about $36–$60 a year going annual on Claude Pro or a standard business seat.
The honest case for staying monthly
Annual discounts are only a deal if you're still paying for the thing in month nine. Reasons to stay monthly anyway:
- Prices change. AI vendors rename plans and reshuffle tiers constantly. Locking in a year of a plan that gets restructured in month four is a special kind of frustration.
- You might switch. If you're still deciding between Claude and ChatGPT, don't prepay a year of either. Pay monthly until the choice is obvious, then go annual.
- Your usage might change. The freelancer who needed $20/month in September might need a business seat — or nothing at all — by March.
- ChatGPT Plus gives you no choice. It's monthly-only, so the decision is made for you.
Rule of thumb: monthly until you're sure, annual once you're settled. Three months of monthly billing on a tool you end up keeping costs you about $15 extra on a standard plan — cheap insurance against a year-long commitment to the wrong tool.
