Claude vs ChatGPT pricing: tier by tier, what's actually different

Last verified: September 2026

The short answer: at the headline $20/month tier, they're priced identically — the difference is what you get, not what you pay. Claude Pro wins for deep reasoning, long documents, and Claude Code. ChatGPT Plus wins for breadth: voice, image generation, Codex, and a cheaper $8/month Go tier. At $100 and $200 the tiers mirror each other too — both vendors are selling the same thing: bigger limits for heavy users.

Where Claude wins on value

Claude Pro is the better buy if you do long-form work: reading and summarizing big documents, writing, analysis, and sustained back-and-forth reasoning. Claude Code is included with Pro, and the annual-billing option (~$17/month equivalent) gives Claude a genuine price edge over Plus if you're committing for a year. Claude's free tier also tends to feel more generous day to day than ChatGPT's handful-of-messages-every-few-hours free plan.

Where ChatGPT wins on value

ChatGPT Plus is the better buy if you want everything in one subscription: voice conversations, image generation, the Codex coding agent, and a generally broader feature set. The $8/month Go tier is the real differentiator — it's the cheapest paid AI subscription on the market, and Claude has no equivalent budget tier. If you only need a little more than free, Go is $96/year where Claude's cheapest paid option is $204/year.

The coding-agent angle: Codex vs Claude Code at $100 and $200

This is where the two lineups match most directly, because both are priced around the same idea: developers who run coding agents all day blow past normal limits.

OpenAI added its $100/month Pro tier in April 2026 specifically for heavier Codex usage. Since the pricing mirrors tier-for-tier, the decision shouldn't be about price — pick the agent and model family that fits your codebase and workflow, and try both on the $20 tiers before spending $100 or $200.

Teams and business

The business tiers mirror each other too: ChatGPT Business runs $20/user/month on annual billing ($25 monthly), and Claude Team runs $20/user/month on annual ($25 monthly), each with a premium $100 annual / $125 monthly seat option.
